10 survival hints

  1. Install a virus checker.
  2. Install a firewall, e.g. Zone Alarm. If you have Windows XP at least enable the built-in Firewall on your internet connection and install SP2.
  3. If you get broadband you absolutely MUST have a software or hardware firewall.
  4. Don't give your email address away unless you absolutely have to and it is to a respectable site.
  5. Do not 'Unsubscribe' unless it is a respectable site.
  6. Do not have the preview pane open in Outlook/Express. If you even just view nasty HTML emails the sender will know about it.
  7. Back up your vital data, including your ISP and email settings.
  8. Do not install any programs suggested by an email. Always go yourself (not via the email) to the site and do it from there (if it's genuine, which it almost certainly won't be).
  9. When browsing, close any advert window that pops up using the top right hand 'X', or ALT-TAB round to the window and press ALT-F4 to close it. Do not press any button within the window.
  10. If something sounds too good to be true, that's because it probably is.
